Birdsong Nature Center - Thomasville, Georgia
Birdsong Nature Center is a very special place. From Thomasville 319 South, turn right at Marathon gas station onto Meridian Road, approximately 5 miles from Marathon gas station or 3.8 miles from stop sign at Route 93, on left side of road. Look for small sign that reads "Birdsong".
Members receive a bimonthly newsletter. Activities like Covey Counts for bobwhite quail, Butterfly Garden work days, a Fire Festival, lots of bird counts and birding excursions, “trail rides,” and more!
Originally a long-leaf pine forest, Birdsong was first transformed into a plantation, then a farm, and now a center for conservation and learning. Betty and Ed Komarek owned the farm then transformed it into a wildlife and bird mecca. Today it is a living museum and outdoor classroom. School groups visit often. Pets are not allowed. There are restrooms, a visitor center with trail maps, and the famous Bird Window with feeders and a lovely water feature. Warblers visit often.
There are 565 acres of wildflower meadows, forests, ponds and swamps. In addition to well maintained trails, Birdsong features a screened house called “The Listening Place” that overlooks the swamp that often has wood storks. We've also seen a large rattlesnake on the trails, so use caution.
In the spring, Birdsong hosts an Old Timey Plant Sale as a fundraiser. It’s organized by June “Bailey” White. You have probably heard her on NPR or read her book Mama Makes Up Her Mind. Birdsong is always looking for volunteers to help with this event.
Coversations/Things we learned:
Our experience: very nice people who operate the property and it's a great place to hike with family and friends. With all of the older buildings and wildlife, it's a hidden jewel and nice flashback to simpler times. Give yourself half a day for this visit.
